Coaching

Athletics coaches are the lifeblood of our sport. Almost all give their time voluntarily, sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm and experience to help athletes of every level progress and achieve their best. Supporting and developing coaches is essential for the sport to thrive, which is why improving the quality of coaching in Norfolk is a key aim of Athletics Norfolk.

National Coaching Pathway

There is a structured national coaching pathway delivered by England Athletics, offering clear routes for those interested in coaching. Coaches can follow either the track & field pathway or the off‑track pathway, depending on their interests and the athletes they support.

Training & Qualifications

England Athletics provides a range of courses throughout the year, from entry‑level qualifications to advanced coaching awards. Courses are listed online and updated regularly, giving new and existing coaches opportunities to continue their development.

Support for Coaches

If you can’t find the course you need, or would like guidance on your coaching journey, you can contact Athletics Norfolk for support or speak directly with your club, who can help advise on the best next steps.

Officiating

Without officials, there would be no competition. They are an essential part of our sport, ensuring events run safely, fairly and to the correct standards. Norfolk has been fortunate to have a dedicated team of experienced officials for many years — but we urgently need new people to step forward and get qualified to secure the future of competition in our county.

Your County Needs You

To keep events running smoothly, we need more volunteers to join the officiating team. Without new officials, we risk reaching a point where competitions may have to be reduced or cancelled. Becoming an official is one of the most valuable ways you can support athletics in Norfolk.

Start Small and Help Out

Getting involved doesn’t require a huge commitment. Many officials begin by helping at local meetings with jobs such as:

holding a tape

marking a throw

measuring a jump

recording finishing positions

assisting with timekeeping

These tasks are straightforward once the basics are understood, and confidence grows quickly with experience.

Support and Training Available

England Athletics provides courses covering all aspects of officiating, from field and track roles to timekeeping and starter qualifications. Athletics Norfolk can often help with training costs and provide support throughout your officiating journey. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact us or speak with your club.
